I'd like to forward a request to approximate both weapons for ranged combat, because the sling seemed to have been a weapon with equal deadliness in ancient times.
I guess the ancient bows were not that sophisticated as models from more recent periods.
The Balearic slingers might come to mind, who had quite a reputation and (out)matched the common archers and javelin-throwers. Alexander the Great used light infantry with slings, I think I can recall Roman auxilliaries using slings, too.
Though slings seemed to be widely used in RL, the current disadvantagous properties of the sling do not allow it to become a useful weapon in AE.

Also javelins could be implemented as a third kind of ranged weapon. The Pilum, the roman version of a javelin was mentioned at the board before.

Some additions to the armory would be welcomed . The Pilum at the moment exists but only as a spear and strangely enough the Romans don't have it even though it's name is latin .

Nations owning the Pilum:
Sicilians
Celtiberians
Biturigians
Lusitanians
Iberians

Pila's from what I've read ( and seen in video games ) were rarely used as melee weapons because of their small size . Roman infantry men would carry them ( 2 of them ) behind their shields and throw them when the enemy got close enough before charging them .

The Pilum could be made into a long ranged weapon with small range but a larger damage out put to make up for it .

I agree with Wolfgar; even knowing pila could be used in close combat effectively, they were more suitable for being launched in first battle stages for stopping enemy charges, delaying his advance and killing his most unprotected soldiers.

Nontheless, I also want to remark that picture used for the pila in the game isn't very reliable I thought, and the one used for the frame is much more similar to the roman pila. Perhaps the actual pilum picture is more suitable to be named soliferrum, like the missiles used in Hispania:

- Pilum: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pilum

- Soliferrum: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soliferrum

At the german server we are modifying the weapons at the moment.
The sling was not mentioned so far but you made a point - Medea - perhaps we can change this weapon a bit to improve it.
The pilum will be a throwing spear and I think there will be one or two additional throwing spears for the tribes.
